This is a wonderful piece! As a veteran homeschooler, I've noticed I've become much more of an unschooler over the years, and with each child. In my case, it's been a bit of a relaxing in my parenting style as well. I was WAY too linear and structured to start, as the first kiddo can attest. :) Now my youngest benefits from the older kids forging ahead and putting up with my rigidness and helping me learn to bend.

As I type this he and his sister are making their own books - he's mechanically inclined and is just having a grand time figuring out how the stapler works. She's my "artsy" one; she asked about endangered animals, pulled out a science text from a few years back, and made her own book about which animals are endangered - including her own artwork. She just taught me about a macaw that is the rarest bird in the world, and we discussed three-toed sloths. There's no way I could have made that work out as well if I had tried to plan it!

How nice to read such encouraging unschool stories! Keep it up!

This is a great article. Carisa is my daughter and I am so proud of her. I think her and her husband is on the right track about the learning process of their children. If I could do it all over again, I would home school her and her brother. I am encouraging young parents to do what is right for their children. Even though mine were in public schools, I took charge of their learning. Good job Carisa.

Thanks, Sandra. We're figuring out how to add author credits to the site. You're right, all of our amazing authors deserve credit!

As it's written in first person, it really should have been published with a by-line or credit. Following that first link back, I see it's Carisa Brewster. It's a nice piece and she should get credit here!

Great job! Thanks for including my comments.

Re testing, there is actually considerable variation; eight states have no requirements at all. See the map at http://www.hslda.org/laws/ .

Best wishes,
