Relaxing in a hot tub at Skamania LodgeSensational Skamania Lodge

Sometimes the best places to visit are those in our very own backyard. Nowhere is that sentiment truer than here in the Northwest. We are truly fortunate to have such a myriad of choices and experiences, just a short drive away.

One such place that’s sure to delight is only 45 minutes from Portland, yet feels like a whole new world of relaxation. Skamania Lodge offers a wealth of scenic beauty and fun activities, whether you go for a quick one- or two-night getaway or choose a longer staycation. Maybe you’ve thought about checking out Skamania, or it’s just been a while since you’ve been — whatever your excuse, stop putting it off and go with your honey, your kids or even a gal pal.

Located in the Gorge, just on the other side of the Columbia River in Stevenson, Washington, Skamania rests within 175 wooded acres, overlooking the beautiful river and the vast surrounding canyons. “Skamania” is the Chinook Indian word for “swift water” and aside from the majesty of the Columbia River, there are nearly 70 waterfalls all within a short distance from the lodge.

With over 250 recently renovated rooms, there are plenty of lodging options based on size and price. Rooms are spacious, rustic and modern, with beautiful forest and river views depending upon which part of the lodge you stay in. Skamania is a full resort with a fantastic 18-hole, par 70 golf course and a brand new putting green perfect for kids.

There’s also the Waterleaf Spa on-site, which offers soothing massage; a mud, bamboo, aloe or sea kelp wrap; pedicures and facials. Connected to the spa is a large indoor pool where you and your kids can splash around, rain or shine, along with an outdoor hot tub and Jacuzzis.

Being active is easy at Skamania. There are three moderate hiking trails located on the grounds, free use of on-site bikes for adults, plus tennis, basketball and volleyball courts. Of course the resort is surrounded by a wonderland of forest beauty. Miles of hikes and scenic points are within close reach. The concierge is available to help plan and customize Gorge excursions.

If you’re looking for a special romantic dining experience or amazing Sunday Champagne Brunch, the award-winning Cascade Dining Room’s kitchen will welcome your appetite. Executive Chef James Boheim crafts culinary magic with fresh local fish, foul and meat, serving up yummy appetizers and entrees from favorites like salmon and smoked pork. Friday night’s Gorge Harvest Buffet is very popular and for good reason. The selection of treats is never-ending!

One of our favorite Skamania touches is the nightly outdoor fire in the large pit, where you can sit around with a coffee or cocktail, stay warm, enjoy the stars, share stories and and roast marshmallows for s’mores. Families especially enjoy this nightly comfort-touch bonding ritual.

Skamania Resort is a fantastic option for getting away without going far away. With everything they offer and such a magnificent setting, you can rejuvenate and relax without the usual vacation hassles of complicated comings and goings. Your time with friends, family, or just each other will be long remembered. Packages and seasonal deals are offered frequently, and with all of their recent improvements and renovations, it’s a perfect time to become reacquainted with a nearby friend, Skamania Resort.
