In Portland there is never a shortage of stuff to do. One thing we have in spades is live venues for concerts and other shows. So, this month we’re going to embrace this advantage in a very Portland way and get out on the town for what I’m calling a high-key, low-key date night. We’re going downtown, taking in a stage show, enjoying some adult beverages and a light (or not-so-light) meal, and indulging in a little creative fun.
Our first stop of the night will be the Roseland Theater, a large music venue that features everything from laid-back jazz performances to energetic techno shows. You’ll need to check the schedule to find the show that fits your mood, but be forewarned that the Roseland has a very full roster of upcoming shows, many of which will be extremely popular, so you’ll need to plan ahead. The theater also possesses the one amenity essential to Portland entertainment venues: a bar. So you can relax and enjoy a drink while you watch a performance.
After you’ve had your fill of music, head up the street to cure your ills at the Remedy Wine Bar. Located a few blocks from the Roseland Theater, Remedy Wine Bar has a very swanky vibe to it, with plush leather chairs and modern décor. As a specialized bar, Remedy offers a wider-than-average selection of wines from diverse locations including Sardinia, Argentina, and (naturally) Oregon. Really though, it’s the food that makes this place a great end-of-the-night stop. Instead of serving monstrous portions that can keep you up all night, Remedy serves small plate options that will satisfy without overstuffing. Menu options range from cheese platters to seared pork belly. However, be aware that much like their selection of drinks, Remedy changes their food options regularly, so visit their website beforehand to see what’s being offered before you head over. Also note that Remedy has somewhat limited seating space, so visiting at peak hours could result in a bit of a wait. On the plus side, they do accept reservations from 5 to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday, so you can guarantee yourself a seat ahead of time.
After your meal, stop by the park across from Remedy and take advantage of one of the park benches to people-watch. Do something fun, like making up exotic backstories for the passersby. See if you can one-up your significant other in imaginative personal histories — though it’s probably wise to let your subjects get out of earshot first.
Not every night out on the town needs to be a black-tie experience. Head downtown and explore. You never know what may be in store — besides a really good time.
